Mortuary Services Information

The Mortuaries are located in the pathology buildings of the BHH and GHH sites. Solihull Mortuary is located in the main hospital building on the Solihull Site. All of the mortuaries form part of the Cellular Pathology Department.

 The Opening hours of the mortuaries are 08:30 to 16:30 (BHH GHH and SH)

Transportation of the deceased between the ward and the mortuary is arranged via the porters (BHH ext 40352, GHH ext 47411 and SH ext 44355) It must be carried out in a timely manor to prevent deterioration of the deceased, refer to the Trust's end of life care policy.

Protocols for requesting post mortems are available from the Bereavement Office 41476 (BHH), 44379 (SH) and 49400(GHH). 

For viewing bodies call the appropriate ward or department who can then contact the relevant mortuary to a arrange an appointment. 42197 (BHH), 45566 (SH) and 47325(GHH).   

The arrangements for post mortem examination should be made via the Bereavement Office , 41476 (BHH), 44379 (SH) and 49400(GHH).  During the consent process Consultant Pathologists are available via appointment for advice and Information for relatives regarding the post mortem process.  For an appointment contactcan the Cellular pathology office extension 43193.

Where the cause of death is in doubt and a death certificate cannot be issued the case should be referred to H.M Coroner via the relevant Bereavement Office.

Protocols for fetal, stillbirth and perinatal post mortems are available from Eden Suite (ext. 42088). All fetal postmortems are completed at Birmingham Womens Hospital. Transport is arranged via local undertakers via the Mortuary.

Solihull and Good Hope Hospital Autopsy service

All autopsies on SH and GHH patients are performed at the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital Mortuary.  The procedures for hospital and general practice autopsies are as for Heartlands Hospital.
